Too many pop videos are just like porn, says Leona Lewis

SINGER Leona Lewis says female artists who make sexually provocative videos need to “have some self respect”.

Female pop stars are damaging young girls with performances that “verge on porn”, according to the star.

Lewis, a former X Factor winner, criticised fellow artists who allow themselves to be “sexually objectified” in raunchy videos and stage shows.

“The great thing about The X Factor is it’s about voice and personality, but outside that in this industry — for female artists — it’s about looks.

“It can be fine to embrace your femininity and your sexiness but sometimes with girl performers it goes over the line and verges on porn and that’s when I think ‘What are you doing? That’s gross. Have some self-respect,” she said.

The 27-year-old Londoner, who has sold 20 million records since her 2006 X Factor win, said: “I’d like to be a positive force for young girls.

“I’m not an angel — I mean I have read and enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey — but when I’m making videos 100 per cent of what influences me is, ‘Would I be comfortable with my six-year-old goddaughter watching this?’

“Because I have seen her doing inappropriate raunchy dances from other videos she has seen and I’m like, ‘No, don’t do that’.”

There were more than 2,000 complaints about last year’s X Factor final, which featured provocative performances by Rihanna and Christina Aguilera.

The regulator warned there should be no place for “sexualised clothing and dance routines” on shows watched by children.
