Anna Nicole Smith Remembered 5 Years Later

Monica Foster commentary: Anna Nicole was quite eccentric, but I always liked her and thought she was beautiful. Her story is one of which no one wants to relate directly to the PORN industry, though her situation indeed was one of which had it’s roots within the world of adult entertainment. Anna Nicole had the soul of a bright and shining star that should have burned far longer than it did. Many associated with the adult entertainment industry around her enabled her negatively, manipulated her and took advantage of her. All of this occurred on a world stage, yet no one did much to help her away from the evil which eventually killed her.

Anna Nicole Smith would have been 44 yesterday. The Playboy model and tabloid staple died of a drug overdose in a Hollywood, Fla., hotel room on Feb. 8, 2007.

Smith achieved her initial notoriety when she married J. Howard Marshall, a Texas oil billionaire, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died soon after, setting off a legal battle that left Smith’s estate with no claim to Marshall’s billions. The case was decided by the Supreme Court in 2011, four years after Smith’s death.

Anna Nicole Smith was survived by a son, Daniel, who mysteriously died three days after Smith gave birth to a daughter, Danielynn in September 2006. Howard K. Stern — her boyfriend and attorney, not the radio celebrity — and photographer Larry Birkhead both claimed paternity.

Eventually it was decided that Birkhead was Danielynn’s father. Stern’s legal woes continued when he was charged with providing prescription drugs to Smith, according to MSNBC.

The Anna Nicole Smith case came to a dramatic conclusion when the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on her physician, Sandeep Kapoor, but convicted Stern and Anna Nicole Smith’s psychiatrist, Kristine Eroshevich, of conspiracy to provide her with drugs even when it was clear she was in danger of dying.
